  4.               THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM

  7.               What you are reading is a screen from a demonstration
  8.               hypertext network created for Sensory Spectrum,
  9.               Inc. In general, this hypertext system was
  10.               constructed for the purpose of showing the value
  11.               and utility of a relatively new form of information
  12.               access technology. In particular, it was
  13.               constructed to prototype a possible solution to an
  14.               information access problem this firm was
  15.               experiencing.

  17.               Staff of this company had, over years, collected
  18.               articles and clippings on information related to
  19.               their business. These were filed away in cabinets.
  20.               The filing system was cumbersome and it was very
  21.               difficult to access information from the the files
  22.               when it was needed. We suggested that the filed
  23.               articles to be first abstracted and assigned a
  24.               unique accession number. This number would be
  25.               recorded on the document itself and it would be be
  26.               listed in an ASCII file with its abstract. The
  27.               articles would thus not have to be filed in special
  28.               order; they would only have to be filed or refiled
  29.               in numerical order.

  31.               The next step was for us to create abstracts of
  32.               articles, which we would then hypertext. With this
  33.               done, staff could easily locate relevant information
  34.               with the hypertext system, and, on the basis of
  35.               information found, quickly pull the actual article
  36.               from the file cabinet using the unique accession
  37.               number listed in the hypertext abstract, which
  38.               corresponds with the number recorded on the filed
  39.               article.

  44.               Since this is merely a demonstration hypertext
  45.               network, its total size is small. Hence the
  46.               information hypertexted is based on a total of ten
  47.               abstracts of articles in the field of the study of
  48.               the human senses in connection to food technology,
  49.               marketing, flavorings, and related issues. There
  50.               are approximately 500 - 600 links and 400 - 500
  51.               nodes in this network, but a much larger network of
  52.               thousands upon thousands links and nodes can be
  53.               constructed or added to this one.  <3A263A TERMS>

  59.               Clifford Urr constructed this hypertext
  60.               demonstration network and wrote the article
  61.               abstracts which appeared in it under contract to
  62.               Sensory Spectrum, Inc. Mr. Urr has a Master's
  63.               of Library Science (M.L.S.) degree from Rutgers
  64.               University, and has a background in reference
  65.               librarianship. He also has extensive experience in
  66.               constructing hypertext knowledgebases.
