THE PURPOSE AND AUTHOR OF THIS PROGRAM
===========================
THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM
===========================
What you are reading is a screen from a demonstration
hypertext network created for Sensory Spectrum,
Inc. In general, this hypertext system was
constructed for the purpose of showing the value
and utility of a relatively new form of information
access technology. In particular, it was
constructed to prototype a possible solution to an
information access problem this firm was
experiencing.
Staff of this company had, over years, collected
articles and clippings on information related to
their business. These were filed away in cabinets.
The filing system was cumbersome and it was very
difficult to access information from the the files
when it was needed. We suggested that the filed
articles to be first abstracted and assigned a
unique accession number. This number would be
recorded on the document itself and it would be be
listed in an ASCII file with its abstract. The
articles would thus not have to be filed in special
order; they would only have to be filed or refiled
in numerical order.
The next step was for us to create abstracts of
articles, which we would then hypertext. With this
done, staff could easily locate relevant information
with the hypertext system, and, on the basis of
information found, quickly pull the actual article
from the file cabinet using the unique accession
number listed in the hypertext abstract, which
corresponds with the number recorded on the filed
article.
- For more information on what hypertext is, see
<3A263B>
Since this is merely a demonstration hypertext
network, its total size is small. Hence the
information hypertexted is based on a total of ten
abstracts of articles in the field of the study of
the human senses in connection to food technology,
marketing, flavorings, and related issues. There
are approximately 500 - 600 links and 400 - 500
nodes in this network, but a much larger network of
thousands upon thousands links and nodes can be
constructed or added to this one. <3A263A TERMS>

THE AUTHOR OF THIS HYPERTEXT NETWORK
====================================
Clifford Urr constructed this hypertext
demonstration network and wrote the article
abstracts which appeared in it under contract to
Sensory Spectrum, Inc. Mr. Urr has a Master's
of Library Science (M.L.S.) degree from Rutgers
University, and has a background in reference
librarianship. He also has extensive experience in
constructing hypertext knowledgebases.
Mr. Urr would be glad to hear any comments on, or
constructive criticisms of, this hypertext network.
